In and around Suffern, N.Y. and in the area of the Ramapo river and Mountains lived a mixed community of Africans and Native Americans and Dutch descendants who spoke a mixed language, “Neger Duits” or ‘Negro-Dutch’. It is possible that some of the Africans had been enslaved before, and thus were Maroons or Runaways.
