About

Mapping Slavery is a public history project that focuses on the Dutch history of slavery and its intersections of the past and the material, asking questions like:
  • Who were the people benefiting from slavery in the Dutch metropole and colonies?
  • Where did they live and decide about the investments in slavery of the slave trade?
  • What traces of slavery/enslavement can we find in the Netherlands, in the streets, in museums, in archives and in intangible heritage?
  • What black presence was there in NL/Europe in earlier ages?
It was initiated in 2013 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam by Dr. Dienke Hondius and currently led by Nancy Jouwe (MA). Read more about the team here. We work together with a great variety of partners.
