In March 1653 the Manhassetts officially lost their hunting and fishing grounds. To pay for colonial goods, they now worked as servants, slaves, whalers, fieldhands, livestock herders an dother jobs.

At least 20 enslaved native Americans and African Americans worked at Sylvester manor. They made barrels for the salt meat, grain and other produce that was used to feed the horses that the Sylvesters used at their sugarplantations in Barbados.
