Livingston Manor was a large agricultural enterprise with substantial slave labor force. Alida Schuyler Livingston (1656-1727), daughter of Philip Pieterse and Margarita van Slichtenhorst and widow of Van Rensselaer, complained in 1711 that ‘it is too much for me to oversee so many Negroes’. n 1812 Philip Henry Livingston had a daughter with a enslaved woman Barbara Williams, but never acknowledged his liaison. The NY times found a descendant and interviewed her in 1998.
